What's a Maker Space?

A maker space, by definition, is a space that brings together a variety of materials and people for the purpose of enabling and encouraging learning though making.  We have a set space in our back room for small groups and pull out whatever materials we need to the library tables for whole class activities.

How does this help MY child?

It gives them opportunities to learn new skills, think outside the box, learn to persevere through challenges and that failure is not the end but the beginning of the process, and to explore new and innovative mediums that interest and engage them.
What would you make?
I LOVE Science Night! -- Robots in the library

Robot Race Track

Race around an obstacle course using our "Sphero" robots.  These little robots work just like BB-8 from Star Wars. They are 2 wheeled gyroscopic robots housed in a tough plastic sphere.  The sphere shape makes for maximum mobility as they go any direction at any time.

Robot World Cup

On one side of the library for "I Love Science Night" will house a soccer field where you can play in a 3 on 3, robot soccer match using our "Ollie" robots.  Controlled with an iPad these cylinder shaped robots will compete by trying to knock the ping pong ball into their opponents goal!

What does our maker space have?

Every maker space will look different depending on the space limitations, budget restrictions, and the expertise of the people running it.  Our facility now houses...

  • woodworking tools

  • sewing and knitting tools and supplies

  • crafting supplies

  • various building blocks (Lego, Kapla, Kinnex, wood cubes)

  • robotics (12 Spheros, 12 Ollies, 18 Ozobots)

  • circuitry (snap circuits, little bits, circuit-boards)

  • 3D printer (Makerbot Replicator)

  • pre-made maker kits (from Kiwi Crate and Maker Maven)
